Advertising Policy
Advertising on this website
This website may display advertisements served by Microsoft Advertising (part of Microsoft, and sometimes referred to by its Bing Ads heritage). Advertising helps keep the lounge's pages free to read. We do not choose the specific advertisements you see, and the presence of an ad does not mean we endorse the advertiser, its products or its services.
How ad serving works
When a page loads, your browser requests an advertisement from Microsoft's ad server. Microsoft selects an ad using information it holds, which can include the content of the page you are reading, general location derived from your IP address, and — where you have consented — cookies that record your browsing activity across sites that partner with Microsoft. The ad is then displayed alongside our content, but your browser communicates directly with Microsoft.
Microsoft's use of cookies and data
Where you accept cookies on this site, Microsoft may set or read cookies and similar technologies to deliver, measure and improve advertising. This can include an advertising identifier, technical details about your device and browser, the pages you visit, and interactions with ads. Microsoft may combine this with data from other Microsoft services where you use them.
We do not control Microsoft's data collection and are not responsible for its practices. Personalised and non-personalised ads
- Personalised ads are selected using information about your likely interests, derived from cookies and your activity across partner sites. These are shown only where you have consented to advertising cookies on this site.
- Non-personalised ads are chosen using only coarse, non-identifying signals such as the general topic of the page and broad location. If you decline advertising cookies, any ads you see will be of this kind, and Microsoft will not use its advertising cookies in connection with your visits here.
How to opt out
You have several ways to limit personalised advertising:
- Use the "Cookie settings" link in our footer to withdraw your consent on this site. You can also decline advertising cookies when the consent banner first appears.
- Manage your preferences directly with Microsoft through its ad personalisation settings, available from your Microsoft account privacy dashboard at account.microsoft.com/privacy, where you can turn off personalised ads.
- Opt out across participating companies via the Digital Advertising Alliance at https://optout.aboutads.info.
- Opt out via the Network Advertising Initiative at https://optout.networkadvertising.org.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings, as described in our cookie policy.
Please note that opting out is device- and browser-specific: you may need to repeat it on other devices or after clearing cookies.
